Connector installation on x86 Devices

You create the connector in the DR wizard, install the x86 image on the device, then paste the Activation Token into its web interface.

The x86 connector installs from an ISO image, on physical hardware or on a virtual machine inside the customer network. First you create it in the Console and get a token, then you install the image and paste the token into its web interface.

1. Create the connector in the Console

  1. Open the DR you just created. Until it is configured its page shows the setup wizard, and you go to the last step, Connector.
  2. Click Add Connector. The creation panel opens.
  3. Pick the type. Today the options are x86 and Proxmox Backup Server. If only one type is active the picker does not appear and the type is already selected. The other types are no longer offered for new connectors, the ones already installed keep working.
  4. Type the Connector name and click Add Connector again.

A panel appears with the install instructions and the Activation Token, which you copy with a double click. Keep it aside, you need it at the end.

2. Prepare the device

Minimum resources for the machine hosting the connector, the ones the Console states in the install panel:

  • 2 CPU cores
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 10 GB disk
  • 2 Ethernet network cards

The type picker, one step earlier, suggests 4 cores, 2 GB and 15 GB. Start from those if the machine allows it.

The first card is eth0 and faces the Internet. The second one is the Cloud Extension card and must be plugged into the segment where the protected servers live, because during a restore the link with the cloud runs through it. On a virtual machine both cards go in bridge mode, never NAT.

3. Install the image

The links are in the same token panel. The ISO is at https://static.sefthy.cloud/iso/latest.iso, the VMware image at https://static.sefthy.cloud/ova/latest.ova, and ready made images exist for Proxmox too. Balena Etcher works fine to write the USB stick.

The installer walks you through five steps.

  1. Choose the language.

  2. Choose the disk to install the system on.

  3. Choose the network card facing the Internet and how it gets its address, DHCP or static.

  4. Choose the Cloud Extension network card.

  5. Wait for the system to be copied, then remove the image and reboot the device.

After the reboot the connector prints its own IP address on screen. That is what you need now.

4. Paste the token

  1. Open http://<CONNECTOR_IP> in your browser.

  2. Log in with the default password Sefthy. The connector immediately asks you to pick a new one.

  3. In the left menu, SISTEMA section, open Token.

  4. Paste the Activation Token and click Save Token.

From here the connector calls the Console, receives its configuration and reports itself active. In the list it still reads “Configuration pending” and the row is not clickable, it can take up to 5 minutes. If it is still pending after a few minutes, check that the device really reaches the Internet through eth0.

The hardware version

A ready made physical connector exists too. It does not go through the Console Shop, you request it from your distributor.
